Lake Hemet

A short drive from Cahuilla Mountain Retreat, Lake Hemet is where the mountains meet the water. It’s stocked with rainbow trout, bluegill and largemouth bass, so anglers can pick up a license at the front market and cast a line right off the shore. If fishing isn’t your thing, rent a kayak or a pontoon boat and spend an hour drifting across water framed by pine-covered slopes and Thomas Mountain in the distance. There’s a simple market on-site for snacks and bait, and plenty of quiet spots along the shoreline for a picnic if you’d rather stay dry. It’s an easy half-day outing that pairs naturally with a stop at nearby Hurkey Creek Park, and it captures a lot of what makes this part of Riverside County special: real mountain scenery without the crowds of the bigger lakes further afield. Go early for the calmest water and the best light on the peaks.
