Hurkey Creek Park

Hurkey Creek Park sits just down Highway 74, tucked into the pines a short drive from the retreat, and it’s an easy place to spend a slow afternoon. The day-use area has shaded picnic tables scattered along the creek, room to spread out a blanket, and a handful of easy trails for stretching your legs without committing to a full hike. It backs onto Lake Hemet, so if you want to extend the outing you can wander over for a look at the water and the anglers working the shoreline. Birders will want to bring binoculars — the mix of pine forest and creek draws a good variety year-round. It’s a particularly good pick if you’re traveling with kids or anyone who wants fresh air without a strenuous climb. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends bring campers and it fills in fast. Bring cash for the day-use fee, sunscreen even in the shade, and something cold to drink — the elevation keeps it pleasant, but the sun is still strong.
