There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over the San Jacinto Mountains in the fall, and it’s one of our favorite times to host guests at Cahuilla Mountain Retreat. If you’ve never planned a mountain trip around autumn before, here’s what to expect.
The days stay mild well into October, while mornings and evenings pick up a real chill — perfect hot tub weather, and a good excuse to bring a warm layer for sitting outside after dark. The summer crowds have thinned by now, so the trails around Thomas Mountain and Hurkey Creek Park feel noticeably emptier, which makes for a more peaceful hike.
The light changes too. Afternoons take on a golden quality that makes the drive along Highway 74 — and the stop at Cahuilla Tewanet Vista Point — even more worth the trip. If you’re chasing color, the higher elevations around Idyllwild show some genuine fall foliage among the pines and oaks, a rare sight this close to the desert.
Fall is also a good season for slower plans. It’s an easy time to linger over a meal at Ribbonwood Grill, spend an unhurried afternoon at Lake Hemet without the summer boat traffic, or simply stay on the property and watch the sky change from the deck.
Practically speaking: pack layers. Daytime highs are pleasant, but temperatures drop fast once the sun goes down, and clear autumn nights make for some of the best stargazing of the year from the hot tub. Trails are dry and stable this time of year, so it’s a reliable season for hiking without worrying about heat or storms.
If you’re looking for the version of Anza with the fewest crowds and the most atmosphere, fall is it.
