Not every day at Cahuilla Mountain Retreat needs a plan — plenty of guests are happy to do nothing but watch the mountains change color. But when you do want to get out and explore, the area around Anza and Idyllwild gives you more than enough to fill a few days.
Start close to the retreat with Cahuilla Tewanet Vista Point, a short stop along Highway 74 with one of the best desert-to-peak views in the region, especially in the late afternoon light. It’s an easy addition to any drive.
Lake Hemet, about twenty minutes away, is worth a half day on its own — rent a kayak or a pontoon boat, or just pick up a fishing license at the market and cast a line from shore. Pair it with a stop at neighboring Hurkey Creek Park for a shaded picnic among the pines.
For a change of pace, drive up to Idyllwild. It’s a proper mountain village with a walkable main street, local shops, and the Idyllwild Nature Center, which is a good stop for local history and wildlife exhibits, especially on a day when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
If you’re here on a weekend evening, Road Runner Bar & Grill back in Anza is the closest thing to nightlife nearby — a genuinely local bar with a friendly crowd and a bit of casino energy next door.
None of this is meant to be rushed. This part of Riverside County rewards a slower pace: a morning hike, a long lunch, an afternoon by the water, and an evening back at the retreat under real stars. Pick two or three of these and let the rest of the day be unplanned.
